The Grid is a collaboration between Athena Kontonikolaki and Eleftherios Ampatzis architectural practice. It is a Japanese inspired shelving unit, constructed by a wooden frame treated in the traditional Japanese wood preservation technique - shou sugi ban. The frame holds ceramic tiles made by black stoneware clay and finished with black manganese and lava glazes. The aesthetic is one of quite imperfection, an expression of wabi-wabi, where the surfaces cracked or faded as might be, enhance the design, embracing the marks of artisanship.
